Monarch Migration Nature Journal
Follow the monarchs on one of nature’s most remarkable journeys! Designed for young naturalists ages 4–7, this printable Nature Journal invites children to observe, wonder, draw, investigate, and follow monarch butterflies as they migrate across North America. Use it alongside our Following the Monarchs Nature Study or enjoy it independently at home, on nature walks, or as part of your homeschool studies.
The Monarch Migration Nature Journal turns the incredible journey of the monarch butterfly into a hands-on nature study designed especially for young learners. Created for children ages 4–7, this printable journal encourages children to learn the way young naturalists do best—by looking closely, asking questions, exploring outdoors, drawing what they notice, and recording their discoveries. Rather than simply reading facts about monarchs, children become active participants in the journey. Throughout the journal, young naturalists will meet the monarch, explore its life cycle and basic needs, follow its migration across North America, investigate how wind and weather affect its journey, consider the challenges migrating butterflies encounter, discover the importance of overwintering habitat, and think about ways we can help butterflies along the way. Pages include a monarch observation study, life-cycle exploration, habitat investigation, migration map, Wind & Wings experiment, migration challenge, Habitat Detective activity, Forest Full of Wings reflection, scientific monarch drawing, conservation prompts, and final Nature Study reflection. Plenty of open drawing and writing space makes the journal accessible for emerging writers while giving older children room to record more detailed observations. The journal was created as the companion to our Following the Monarchs: Monarch Migration Nature Study, so families participating in our in-person classes can bring it along and complete pages as we investigate together. You do not need to attend the classes to use it. Families learning from home can follow the journal at their own pace, pair it with favorite monarch books, take it on nature walks, or use it as the foundation for a simple butterfly unit study. The goal isn't to complete every blank perfectly. It's to slow down, look closely, and give children a place to capture what they notice and wonder about the natural world. Perfect for: homeschool nature study, ages 4–7, family nature walks, butterfly units, science enrichment, outdoor learning, and curious young naturalists.
