Wonders & Foundations: The World That Feeds Me (On the Farm)
Where does our food come from—and who helps it get to our table? The World That Feeds Me invites young learners to explore life on the farm through play, stories, sensory experiences, art, nature, and hands-on discovery. Children follow food from farm to table, discover how farm animals help feed and support us, and explore the people, tools, and daily work that keep a farm growing. Designed for ages 2–7, activities include simple differentiation for Seedlings, Sprouts, and Blossoms, allowing siblings and multi-age learners to explore the same big ideas at their own developmental level.
In The World That Feeds Me, children step into the world of farms to investigate where the foods on their plates begin. Rather than learning about farms through worksheets alone, children are invited to harvest, build, pour, paint, pretend, investigate, count, create, and ask questions as they make connections between farms and their own everyday lives. The three-week unit moves through a natural progression: Week 1 • The Food on My Plate Children begin with the question, “Where does our food come from?” They explore fruits and vegetables, farmers markets, harvesting, and the journey food takes from the farm to our tables through sensory play, art, stories, math, and hands-on investigation. Week 2 • Farm Animals Next, children meet the animals that live on farms and discover some of the ways animals help nourish our families. Playful experiences invite learners to explore eggs, dairy, animal care, textures, and the relationship between farmers and their animals. Week 3 • Caring for the Farm Finally, children discover that farms require care, responsibility, people, and tools. Through farm chores, tractor-inspired art, soil and compost exploration, dramatic play, and building challenges, children investigate what it takes to keep a farm and the animals safe and thriving. Throughout the unit, our Wonders & Foundations™ approach naturally weaves together early literacy, vocabulary, mathematical thinking, scientific inquiry, creative expression, movement, and problem-solving. Activities such as sensory explorations, Nature Investigations, Process Art, Wonder Lab challenges, Snacktivities, Music & Movement, and curated read-alouds provide multiple ways for children to encounter each concept. Most importantly, The World That Feeds Me helps children see that the food on their plate has a story. From the soil and animals to farmers, markets, and families, children begin to recognize the many connections behind the food that feeds them.
