The World Within Me is a four-week, play-based unit study that invites children to explore the question “Who am I?” Through stories, conversation, creative expression, sensory experiences, nature, movement, and investigation, children discover more about their identities while developing foundational literacy, mathematical thinking, scientific inquiry, and communication skills. Week 1 • My Name What makes my name special? Children begin with one of the most meaningful pieces of print they know—their own name. Through name hunts, sensory writing, art, rhythm, letter exploration, and playful literacy experiences, learners begin noticing the letters, sounds, patterns, and stories that make their names uniquely theirs. Week 2 • My Senses How do my senses help me discover the world? Children become sensory scientists as they listen, smell, touch, taste, look closely, compare, and describe. Hands-on investigations encourage rich vocabulary, observation, early scientific thinking, and conversations about how our bodies gather information about the world around us. Week 3 • My Body What can my amazing body do? From bones and heartbeats to movement and strength, children investigate the incredible ways their bodies work. Science exploration, body-inspired art, movement, nature investigations, math, and literacy help children build an age-appropriate understanding of their bodies while celebrating all the different ways they can move, learn, and grow. Week 4 • My Feelings How can I understand and express what I feel? The month concludes by helping children notice, name, and communicate feelings through stories, self-portraits, play, movement, and meaningful conversation. Rather than labeling feelings as “good” or “bad,” children explore the many ways feelings can look and feel while building confidence in expressing their experiences.
