Wonders & Foundations: The World Within Me (All About My Family)

What makes a family, and how do the people we love help shape who we are? The World Within Me: All About My Family invites children to explore the people, places, routines, memories, and traditions that make their family story their own. Across four connected weeks—In My Home, In My Life, In My Past, and Families Are Different—children discover that families can look and live in many different ways while finding meaningful connections between home, family, and their own growing identity. Designed for ages 2–7, this Learning Companion weaves literacy, math, science, art, sensory play, nature, movement, and project-based learning into playful experiences differentiated for Seedlings, Sprouts, and Blossoms.

Our understanding of ourselves begins with the people, places, stories, and experiences that surround us. In The World Within Me: All About My Family, children turn their attention from discovering themselves to exploring the families and relationships that are part of their everyday lives. Through stories, conversation, creative expression, hands-on investigation, and purposeful play, learners consider what makes a place feel like home, how their daily lives are shaped by routines and relationships, how families carry memories and traditions through time, and the many different ways a family can look. Rather than asking children to fit their family into one definition, this unit creates space to notice, celebrate, wonder, and share. Children are encouraged to tell their own stories while discovering that although our homes, traditions, histories, routines, and family structures may be different, every family has a story worth knowing. Week 1 • In My Home What makes a place feel like home? Children begin with the familiar spaces of home. Through building, sorting, dramatic play, sensory exploration, art, literacy, and mathematical thinking, they investigate the objects, routines, people, and responsibilities that help a household work together. Invitations such as building homes, exploring household jobs, and discovering homes in nature help children broaden their understanding of what “home” can mean. Week 2 • In My Life What makes up the rhythm of my everyday life? Children explore the routines, places, people, and experiences that fill their days. Sequencing, packing for familiar places, mapping everyday experiences, stories, and playful investigations help learners recognize patterns in daily life while developing concepts of order, time, shape, organization, and independence. Week 3 • In My Past How does my family's past connect to who I am today? Family photographs, memories, traditions, keepsakes, and stories become invitations to explore the idea of past and present. Children investigate how people grow and change over time while discovering ways families remember and pass stories from one generation to another. Timelines, quilt-inspired art, pattern exploration, and storytelling make history personal and meaningful. Week 4 • Families Are Different How can families be different and still share love and connection? The unit concludes by celebrating the many ways families can look, live, gather, eat, celebrate, and care for one another. Inspired by inclusive stories and open-ended experiences, children notice both similarities and differences without defining one type of family as the norm. Art, food, nature, conversation, and mathematical investigations invite children to celebrate the people who matter to them.
